Airstreamers have been going to local rallies for years, and once a year there is a “special” rally that airstreams try to attend from all over the US and now the world.
This is the “Airstream Club International Rally” which is located in Doswell, Virginia this year. The 2020 rally will be in Loveland, Colorado. so no issue with the excessive heat we have been subjected to thus far. 🙂
This is a week long event at the Meadow Event Center, home to the birthplace of one of the greatest horses to ever race and a triple crown winner, Secretariat, and it involves parades, seminars, guest speakers, and prize giveaways to boot.
The great great granddaughter “Ground Shaker” lives here as well.
The event is designed to bring together folks from all parts of the country to meet, socialize, eat and check out all the different clubs/units and to meet new friends or reunite with old friends.
You will see some of the “Vintage” Airstreams that date from the 50’s-60’s. A lot of these are in better shape than when they came off the factory floor, with improvements in construction and equipment. Many try to conserve the older stuff by just fixing it up, making improvements, and using it just like their grandparents did in the good ole days.
You will also find the New ones that have literally just come off the factory floor with all the latest and greatest that is in an Airstream.
Airstreamers encompass older and now more younger people that have started to join the ranks of owners. Some are opting to buy a new unit and, with a mobile job in hand, hit the highways and byways of these great United States, only needing a good internet connection to be productive. With the advances in data technology, it is increasingly easy to work and see National Parks and other sites around the country.
We are currently ensconced with a group from Iowa of all places! This is where Karen’s uncle and aunt currently live, near the Des Moines area. (Get ready… we are heading your way SOON!) They are a fun bunch for sure.
The Meadow Event site also serves as the Virginia State Fair held every year in Oct. It’s a large, sprawling complex with nice grass areas, gravel and paved sections, just down the road from the theme park “Kings Dominion.”
When you have over 700 Airstream units that all need AC in 95+ degree temps – 100’s on some days – heavy gauge electric cords were strung by volunteers days before most units started coming in on Wed of last week. That, plus the need for water, makes for a fun time with the spaghetti of hose, Y splitters, and getting hooked up.
Thus far, this has been a great event, but it is only Monday with 4 days to go.
Stay tuned.
